"The Hearing Aid" watercolor

With this sketch I had to find a picture with a child's hearing aid. I think that the one shown is actually a older model. The newer digital hearing aids can be smaller and less conspicuous.

Here is another sketch for the book.

"On the field" watercolor

This is a watercolor sketch for a children's book that my wife is writing. It is about a little girl who misses what people are saying around her. She gets frustrated by not hearing what they are saying to her. And everyone around her gets annoyed by being asked "what?" when they are around her. She becomes known as the "What?" girl. Slowly instead of saying "what?" she starts to say "whatever!". This changes when she sees an audiologist, and discovers that she has a hearing problem. The little girl is given hearing aids which helps to open up a world that she may have missing out of before.

"Blue Devil" paper mache

This is another example that I made for a student project. This paper mache mask is an example of a folk art style. I showed examples of paper mache masks found in South America. The students are having fun with the project, but it is not an easy project to clean up after.

"Seasons" pen, pencil, in an altered book

Often trees can go unnoticed in our landscapes. But there is a great psychological effect that they have in us. They provide nourishment, shade, beauty, and a sense of time. A barren landscape is a defenseless soul.

"southwestscape" watercolor

I was looking through some of the work of Maynard Dixon, who was friend of LeConte Stewart's. Dixon was an artist form the early 20th century whose work centered around the American Southwest. There is a body of his work at the BYU museum of art. The acquisition of this work was a coupe for the university. It led to the creation of the current museum.
Looking at his paintings you can feel the magical allure that these solitary lands of color have over artist's.
This is my own little made up vision of a desert landscape. It is a small painting (about the size of a postcard) so I am sure it lacks the grandeur of color that the real lands hold.

"Dinosaur" pencil

This evening we went to the opening of the Le Conte Stewart art festival. It is late to talk about it. But I had to do a landscape sketch in honor of the great Utah landscape artist.

"St. Vincent" color pencil

Okay, I promise that this is the last Vincent portrait.

"Vincent en Rose" color pencil

I took the drawing from yesterday and drew another copy and and added my own post-impressionist flare in adding the color. I wanted use different colors from his original self portrait he did. These Fauvist colors can create a different energy than the cooler colors that Van Gogh used.

"Vincent" pen

This little drawing is from Van Gogh's self portrait. It came about after reading a great children's book called Camille and the Sunflower. It is a story of a young boy who befriends the strange artist. Camille sees that not everyone appreciates the Van Gogh's genius. The artist is even forced to leave. But through his paintings he is not forgotten. It is a fantastic book that shows Van Gogh through the eyes of a child.

"Fallen Sparrow" digital

One evening, coming home, we found this sparrow just sitting in our drive way. It wouldn't fly away. It just hopped a little bit. We all wondered where it came from and was it wounded? My oldest daughter looked up at here bedroom window and discovered what had happened. By the looking at the feathers still stuck to the window we surmised that this little bird must have flown smack into the window. We left the bird be and she was gone just a moment later.
